Background

This story is based on some real events from my days as a uniformed Customs Officer.

The main character, Will Mortimer, is not me or based on any of my prior colleagues, but I like to think he has many qualities (and flaws) that make him interesting and likeable. Will has a strong sense of 'right and wrong' and abiding by the law has been essential to his ethos - at least it used to be...

Most of you have probably passed through Customs and most of you have probably felt a little apprehensive, even if you are sure you are not over your allowances, or carrying anything you shouldn't. That was what made my time as a Customs Officer so interesting - how do you spot the person who is doing wrong?  Well, some of those secrets get revealed as the story unfolds.

The book is set in the early 1990's, an interesting time - It was before the Internet, before mobile phones were common, before digital cameras were readily available.  And a time when Eastern Europe was in turmoil, the Berlin Wall had fallen and the USSR was about to break up.

This story is about Will and sees him getting an unexpected request to help the UK Security Services expose some high level organised criminal gangs. But is also about how he has changed since the death of his Fiancée, and how he copes with injustice.

They need him to go undercover and to use his knowledge of Customs procedures to convince a crime gang that he can get their illicit load through UK Customs controls. He does a good job and finds himself recruited to carry out further missions, under the utmost secrecy. But it gets much more difficult, much more dangerous. He becomes convinced that sometimes justice can only be served by stepping outside of the law...
